We started to build our OFF GRID home in 2015 with a permit - Building started in 2017, and did not complete it until 2024 . We built everything ourselves including plumbing, electrical, fire copper suppression, metal roofing, cedar shake siding, etc. The basement was the hardest to complete. We feel the timber frame is more difficult due to having no attic space, heavy insulated sip panels which are R30 insulated, and all the craftmanship it took. We bought a sawmill to help us mill our own trim, and beams for stairs. We saved hundreds of thousands of dollars building it ourselves, but you sacrifice a lot. We were willing to put in the work and the reward was worth it. We now have a home where everything has a story and we can say we had a hand in the completion.
